Safety and help

HAI is for people 13 and older, and 18 and older in the UK, EEA, Switzerland, Tennessee and Mississippi. Anyone can report or block a person on an Agreement; reports about someone under 18 are reviewed within 24 hours.

Safety and help

HAI helps people work through a disagreement and write down what they agree to. This page explains who can use HAI, what HAI’s agents won’t help with, how to report or block someone, and where to get help right away.

If you’re in danger

If you or someone else is in danger right now, call your local emergency number (911 in the United States). HAI isn’t an emergency service and can’t contact anyone for you.

If you’re thinking about suicide or hurting yourself, please reach out now: in the United States, call or text 988 (the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline); elsewhere, call your local emergency number or a crisis line.

When someone writes to a HAI agent about suicide or hurting themselves, the agent gives them these same resources. When someone says they are in danger, it tells them to call their local emergency number. The agent never claims it will alert anyone.

Who can use HAI

  • You must be at least 13, or older if the law where you live sets a higher age.
  • In the United Kingdom, the European Economic Area and Switzerland, and in the US states of Tennessee and Mississippi, you must be 18 or older.
  • If you’re under 18, a parent or guardian who allows you to use HAI agrees to the Terms of Service for themselves and for you, and is responsible for your use, including any purchases. Only they can buy a plan, in their own name.
  • Hosted agents and @hai.ai email addresses are for people 18 or older.
  • Your app store may ask a parent to approve before someone under 18 can agree to the Terms.
  • If we learn that someone under 13 is using HAI, we end their use and delete their information as the Privacy Policy describes. When someone tells HAI’s agent they’re under 13, the agent stops and HAI’s team is told. A parent or guardian can write to privacy@hai.io.

What HAI’s agents won’t help with

  • An agreement that includes anyone under 13.
  • Sexual content involving or for anyone under 18.
  • Terms between someone under 18 and an adult who isn’t their parent or guardian that keep things secret from parents, guardians, school or the police; involve romance, sex, nudity, or photos or videos of the teen; arrange meeting alone, travel, overnight stays or private transport; involve alcohol, drugs, or gifts, money or favours beyond ordinary pay for agreed work; or hide or delete messages.
  • Anything the Terms of Service forbid, such as harassment, threats or breaking the law.

Ordinary arrangements are fine, such as with parents, guardians, teachers, coaches, employers or roommates. If an adult asks someone under 18 to keep a secret, meet alone, or exchange money, gifts or photos, talk to a parent, guardian or another adult you trust.

Report or block someone

  • On an Agreement: choose Report or block someone, then the person. In a group, you can also use the menu beside their name.
  • In a chat: open a message’s menu and choose Report message.
  • On a photo someone shared with you: choose Report photo under it.
  • After you decline an invitation: choose Report this invitation on the same page.

Blocking stops that person from inviting you or messaging you through HAI, and ends any chat you share. HAI also stops emailing or texting you about Agreements you share with them; you can still open them in HAI. HAI doesn’t tell them who blocked them. Your Agreements and their records stay. You can unblock someone in Settings, under Blocked people.

Reports go to HAI’s team. We review every report, and anything about someone under 18 within 24 hours. A report keeps a copy of the message or photo you reported. We may remove content, limit features or close accounts. You can also write to support@hai.ai.

We report apparent child sexual abuse material to the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC).

For parents and teens

HAI’s agents are AI. They help people say what they need and write down what they agree to; they aren’t lawyers, mediators or counsellors. AI chat may not be suitable for some minors, and parents and guardians decide whether their teen uses HAI.

  • We don’t sell anyone’s personal information, share it for targeted advertising, or show ads.
  • We don’t share content from people we know are under 18 with outside researchers or include it in published research.
  • Where the Privacy Policy relies on your consent and we know you are below the age at which you can give it yourself, we don’t use your content for research or training.
  • California residents under 18 can ask us to remove content they posted from other users’ view.

A parent or guardian can write to privacy@hai.io about a teen’s information. Details are in section 11 of the Privacy Policy.

What HAI does, and what it can’t

HAI gives everyone tools to report and block, reviews reports, and acts on them. We don’t read every message, and we can’t control what people say or do, on HAI or when they meet. You are responsible for what you share and agree to.

  • Share only what you would be comfortable with the other people seeing.
  • Never share your passwords or sign-in codes, and don’t send private photos to anyone you meet here.
  • If something feels wrong, stop, block, report, and tell someone you trust.
